Human trafficking is a form of modern enslavement that occurs in every state, including New Jersey. According to the NJ Human Trafficking Task Force brochure (below), “Victims of human trafficking, men, women and children, can be exploited for the purpose of commercial sexual activity, including prostitution and pornography, as well as many types of forced labor, including domestic servitude and migrant agricultural work. Traffickers lure and control their victims through the use of force, fraud, or coercion, and employ techniques such as physical and psychological abuse, false employment offers, document holding, and isolation.” While there are different types of human trafficking, research shows that sex trafficking is statistically higher than the rest in New Jersey. According to The Human Trafficking Hotline, there were 151 cases identified in 2021, with 466 victims involved (cases can involve multiple victims).

Military
Sexual Trauma (MST) is a term used by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
(VA) to refer to sexual assault or threatening sexual harassment experienced
during military service. In 2018, 20,500 service members were sexually
assaulted or raped including 13,000 women and 7,500 men. Of women who reported
a penetrative sexual assault, 59% were assaulted by someone with a higher rank
than them, and 24% were assaulted by someone in their chain of command. A vast
majority of these cases go unreported for a number of reasons.  Deciding
what to do after a sexual assault can be quite difficult, but there is
help. The
Safe Helpline
is the Department of Defense’s sole hotline
for members of the DoD community affected by sexual assault. Operated by the
Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), they offer a completely anonymous
and confidential, 24/7 hotline.

It may be extremely difficult for male survivors to come forward given the stigmas relating to sexual assault. There is a common misconception that men cannot be victims of sexual assault and that simply is NOT true!

The reality is, one in ten men will be victims of a sexual assault in their lifetime.

About 3% of American men – or 1 in 33 – have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.

How to Support Male Survivors:

  • Survivors struggle with fears of being understood or believed.
  • Validate their feelings and provide a safe space for them to share what they are thinking and feeling.
  • Express sincere concern and listen in a non-judgmental way.
  • Do not ask for details of their assault if they have not decided to openly share them with you.
  • Encourage them to seek additional supports such as the Union County Rape Crisis Center or any of the sites below:

Market Street Mission

Since 1889, the Market Street Mission has been changing the lives of those who are homeless, hungry and struggling with addiction through the power of Christ and the support of the community. They care for immediate needs today and long-term needs for a stable, independent tomorrow.

Services:

  • Meals:Free daily meals served to our community.
  • Men’s Addiction Recovery: Free, long-term men’s Christian addiction recovery program that includes 12-step work, individual and group counseling, education & job training.
  • Shelter:A safe place for men experiencing homelessness.
The Hoving Home is a nonprofit, residential faith based program. They serve women ages 18 and over who have been involved in drug addiction, alcoholism, prostitution, crime and other life controlling problems. The twelve-month & six-month program is geared toward rebuilding broken lives in an atmosphere of warmth, trust, support and love.
BCIS provides crisis intervention and support to Union County residents ages 18 and older. Their goal is to help people in crisis gain control of their symptoms and remain in the community as an alternative to going to the emergency room through a three-step process.
1. The multidisciplinary team assess all enrollees for their mental health needs and co-occurring needs if substance use is an issue.
2. The team provides clinical services and medication management as needed as part of the brief crisis stabilization.
3. BCIS partners with mental health outpatient centers and community based agencies in Union County and outside the county if needed to ensure that rapid referral and linkages take place and that treatment continues successfully.
At High Point, they provide personalized counseling and therapy sessions in order to achieve a deep understanding of the specific issues that contributed to their substance problem. They use medication assisted treatment to help patients whose addiction is severe enough to warrant it. Each client participates in case management with a counselor to address both clinical and non-clinical issues.
Summit Oaks Hospital provides quality behavioral health care for children, adolescents and adults who have been struggling with psychiatric and substance use issues. No-cost, confidential assessments can be scheduled 24/7.
The goal of their work is to help patients cope with drug and alcohol addictions, and also work to help them develop the necessary tools and coping mechanisms required to manage the difficulties and daily challenges of life.
Trinitas offers special services to chemically dependent women that are pregnant, post partum, or have dependent children. Their intensive outpatient program addresses the specific needs of each individual.

On May 19, 2025, the TAKE IT DOWN Act was signed into law, marking the first federal protection against tech-enabled sexual abuse. The law criminalizes the sharing or threat to share nonconsensual intimate images (NCII)—including deepfakes—and mandates platforms to remove such content within 48 hours of a verified survivor request.

Although platforms have up to a year to comply with new federal protections, immediate help is available. The Cyber Civil Rights Initiative offers a free 24/7 hotline at 1-844-878-2274 for victims of image-based sexual abuse. Their Safety Center provides legal resources, including attorney lists and state laws. As of May 2025all U.S. states and D.C. have laws banning image-based sexual abuse, though details vary by state.
